Edward Deci and Richard Ryan’s Self-Determination Theory does not split motivation into internal and external. It places it on a continuum from amotivation through external, introjected, identified and integrated regulation to intrinsic motivation. What matters is not how strong the motivation is but how much the action feels like your own choice.
